...and this is my first post this year :( So a belated "Happy New Year" to you, and the main reason for my non-attendance on here are different jobs that I am working on at one go. As a consequence, I don't find any time to draw something for myself that is worth posting on here...
BUT to prove, THAT I'm working, I took a picture of my working place where you can see a current illustration for a book project on the screen of my good old laptop :)
Ups, es ist schon fast Ende Januar und das hier ist mein erster Eintrag dieses Jahr :( Also erstmal ein verspätetes "Frohes Neues", und der Grund für meine Abwesendheit hier sind verschiedene Aufträge, an denen ich gerade gleichzeitig arbeite. In Folge dessen finde ich kaum noch Zeit irgendwas für mich selbst zu zeichnen, das es wert wäre, hier gezeigt zu werden...
ABER um zu beweisen, DASS ich arbeite, hier ein Foto von meinem Arbeitsplatz mit einer aktuellen Illustration für ein Buchprojekt auf meinem guten alten Laptop :)

How time flies! Not so very long ago my Klick!-children were little 3rd -grade-brats and whoosh, they are half-adult teenagers in the 7th class!
The seventh Klick!-book was published at the beginning of this school year and as always the care of my pupils had been a whale of a time! I'm just working on the eighth book and I'm gradually getting stressed by my kids... puberty and stuff... you know that ;)
Wie doch die Zeit vergeht! Vor nicht langer Zeit waren meine Klick-Kinder noch kleine Blagen inner dritten Klasse und schwupps, schon sind sie halberwachsene Teenager in der 7ten!
Das siebte Klick!-Buch ist Anfang dieses Schuljahres erschienen und wie immer hat die Betreuung meiner Schüler einen Heidenspaß gemacht! Ich sitz gerade am achten Band, und langsam wird's anstrengend mit den Bälger... Pubertät und so... man kennt das ja ;)

I've been really busy with book projects the last weeks, that turned out very well, but I'm afraid I can't show anything from it yet. Cos the books aren't published yet. The old problem. BUT here are some pictures from my sketchbook I've drawn in the meantime. And I post them uncommented :)
Ich war in den letzten Wochen schwer mit zwei Buchprojekten beschäftigt, die wirklich hübsch geworden sind, aber aus denen ich leider noch nix zeigen kann, weil die Bücher halt noch nicht erschienen sind. Das alte Problem. ABER hier ein paar Bilder aus meinem Skizzenbuch, die ich in der Zwischenzeit gezeichnet hab. Ich poste die einfach mal unkommentiert :)

...and I'm not talking about inhuman torture, but about the fifth jigsaw puzzle I have illustrated for Schmidtspiele! It's from the Schmidt's Katze series again and this time S.'s C. plays hide and seek with it's meal...erm, friends, I mean :)

For the Berlin advertiser DauthKaun I've illustrated the current image campaign of the Berliner Ordnungsämter (Berlin regulatory authority).
Vor kurzem hab ich für die Berliner Werbeagentur DauthKaun die aktuelle Imagekampagne der Berliner Ordnungsämter illustriert.

Eight colorful info-flyer give the citizen an understanding of their different major tasks to get away from the bad repute of the annoying parking ticket writer (don't know what "Knöllchen" is in english O_o) Next to the flyer the campaign contained inner city posters and an image film that was played in Berlin cinemas (what means, that I made my first experiences in theatrical motion picture :P)
Acht Info-Flyer bringen dem Bürger dabei die Hauptaufgaben des Ordnungsamts näher, um vom Ruf des lästigen Knöllchenschreibers wegzukommen. Neben den Flyern bestand die Kampagne aus Plakaten, sowie einem Film, der in den Berliner Kinos vor den Vorstellungen gezeigt wurde (ich hab also quasi meine ersten Kinofilmerfahrungen gemacht :P)

Alternation is important! So after cute cat games with little mice, now to something completely different: NECROPHILIA (muhaha)

The second issue of the German Girls & Corpses-magazine is out now and again it's filled with the trashiest articels and picture series you can find on the German market.

And after I published the lovely piranha mermaids in the last year's G&C, I was able to contribute a picture to this issue too. It's Nefertitti and Cleopatra teasing a mummy that's already pretty stiff... :P

If you like barely dressed girls playing with rotten bodies, I warmly recommend this mag to you!
But I doubt that you will find G&C at the store around the corner, so better order it directly at Raptor Publishing!

Also ich sach ma: Getz gehtet ab wie Schmidt's Katze! (this is a German saying and I think it means the same as "it takes off like a scalded cat" or something.)
Schmidts Katze from Schmidt Spiele is a fast hide and seek memory game for kids of four years of age and over. Slip into the role of a mouse and try to hide from the (friendly) Schmidt's cat (it just wanna play with the mice... honestly :)

And I like most that they have named one of the eight mouse-character after me: Timo Tollkühn :))

First cat sketches, that didn't really work well yet:

Drawing the cat in a walking pose was a literal step into the right direction. This evolution of the final sketch proves the rule: size (of the head) does matter!

On the basis of the finally inked cat character, I created a fur colour range. The editor chose the black one cos it was best to be combined with every coloured background.

After that, the fur painting had to be defined in detail.

And tadaaa (or meoow): Schmidts Katze was made!

It was the whitest turn of the year since centuries and fittingly Home to Paris (will they ever arrive there?) released their new album called Snow. The release party took place at the Gleis22 in Münster again and like usually they played their indi-ska-balkan-pop-mix to a capacity crowd. Was fun to witness it.

This is the poster for the concert. I played Mother Hulda (Frau Holle...), let it snow and turned the stage from their new homepage into a wunderful winter wonderland!

And I used the same picture for the cover and case design of the new album Snow: This time it comes around in a fancy digi-pack!

Homepage, poster and CD became well-rounded and I'm already looking forward their new ideas and topics.

Happy new Year v2.11! Hope you all had a good upgrade!
To follow the same procedure as every year, I can show you my new calender for 2011. This time Fridolin, the funky pharmacy fox invented a time maschine, that may be look like an apple i-dixi mobile toilet, but it works!
Taming mammuths in the Ice Age, watching the conquest of the paradise, modelling for Leonardo DaVinci, listening to Mozart, being traced by Sherlock Holmes or finally celebrating the new year in a future Manhattan - the adventures of the Frido have never been that spectacular before! (I just got a call from James Cameron who wants to make a 12 month long pharmacy calender-movie instead of Avatar2 (...I think Andy Serkis will play Fridolin, but that's not verified, so sshhh!)

Ok, jokes apart, it was real fun again to draw the calender and it turned out ways more detailed than the last one, but it was worth the effort. And who detects him-/herself in the second last picture (november/present-day) will be in the movie too ;)

This second picture is based on an old sketch that Scherke gave me about 10 years ago asking me to draw it in a comic style. I never did that, because that paper got misplaced and I recovered it no more than two month ago when I moved back to Bo. And Scherke's birthday was the best chance for lately grant the question. (I only added goat priests, skulls, cables and tentacles... just things that make a good picture :p

If you are already searching for the perfect christmas present for your 5+ years old kids, I warmly recommend the skill-game Kugelhund (Roly-Poly Dog or Chiens en folie pour nos amis francaise:) that has just been released at Schmidt Spiele (and I do not only recommend it, cos I did the illustration...!)

It's a real fun digging game and it even has it's own gameplay-trailer (OMG!)

From the game instruction:
Bella and Bello are completely over the moon! Their friend Isabella has come to visit unexpectedly. And of course they want to give her their best bones. But where on earth have they buried them? Oh yes, under the garden gnome and there, beside the watering can.

I passed this creatively arranged shopwindow of a nearby bakery store in my new neighbourhood in Bochum the other day. And I was so impressed, so deeply moved by the aesthetic coupled with a subliminal eroticism the decoration radiated, that I had to take this picture.

Before ALF and The Hoffmeister (as Michael Knight) became my childhood heroes, there was this big, friendly and talking elephant Benjamin Blümchen and his smart friend Otto, whose cassette adventures made me fall asleep every single evening. All the happier I was to draw a Benjamin Blümchen puzzle (I had already drawn him when I was four, so I was practiced ;)

But believe me, it was harder than it looks to hit the pretty strictly defined style.

I recently started to listen to audiobooks while working and came across H.P. Lovecraft's "The Call of Cthulhu" (or "Der Ruf des Cthulhu" - I listened to the german version) on Youtube. I have already read the story years ago, but again I were pretty excited after listening and had to quickly draw it. Maybe I will color it when I've got the time!

Oh and yepp - to take the wind out of the Cthulhu follower's sails: I know, that Lovecraft described C's body being huge and bulky, but I always imagine it the exact opposite and so it's my interpretation - basta!

Bonjour! Yesterday I went to France to promote my upcoming calender for 2011.
I changed Fridolin the funny pharmacist fox into Mona Fridolisa and smuggled the picture into the Louvre. (To change the paintings I cleared the Mona Lisa room by shouting that the Venus de Milo had lost her blankets and wasn't able to cover herself cos of her lack of arms. Even the guard wanted to see her naked!) Muhar har, me is perfidious!!

Now I don't know what to do with that scruffy original. Maybe I will whitewash it for the next kitchen party...

Good morning, pupils, sit down, it's time for math again!

The school- and working books for the 6th grade will be released soon and I it's more and more fun to illustrate them. Like I told you in the last post on that subject, "my" book-pupils are growing from book to book and it's fun to give them more and more character and own personality (as much charakter and personality as kids in a schoolbook can have).
This time I even had the possibilitiy to place some personal insiders in the illustrations, like friends that play the part of teachers or parents (yo, Krazy-K, you see Murat's dad?) ;P Not to mention the close friendship between Tim and Anna (the resemblance to real existing illustrators is intended by all means). So it's still fun and I'm glad that there will be four more books for me to illustrate.

Did I ever introduce my kids to you? Well, on this older picture from Klick! 5 they introduce themselves :)

I would never have thought that I would ever have so much fun with math books. I hated math at school and all I wanted at that time was a WEAPON OF MATH DESTRUCTION (HAHAha, oh man, I had to tell that one...)

The disgusting smell of fish is not based on a lack of body hygiene (or so he claims...).

I do not regularly show my monthly Fred Fish on here, but the newest one is really worth to be gaped at! The topic of the next month's book recention is about the rampant growth of the bureaucracy due to a growing headcount, that slows down the workflow insteat of improving it. In other words: Too many cooks spoil the broth.
This is the original Fred Fish illustration that I turned into the oldschool Freakshow placard just for fun (I'm very into those oldschool trash posters at the moment).

Still-Leben A40 Ruhrschnellweg

Here are some impressions of the "A40 - Stilleben" ("A40 - Still life"). Over 3 million of people from the Ruhr Area partied, skated or rode the bycicle together on 60km (37miles) between Duisburg and Dortmund.It was great and peaceful and somehow strange to experience the known highway in "slow motion". Isa and me made our way from Bo-Stahlhausen to Wattenscheid and back - a way you usually drive by car in 5 minutes, but we nearly needed three hours to walk (you see a motorway with other eyes when you once walked it).

And after a whole day on a ca. 37 degreese hot highway without sun blocker we felt as knocked over as this little fellow (those are the things you don't notice when you drive the street with 120 km/h). I didn't wrote the chalk comments and I think it's extremely morbid, but it's somehow part of the daily life on the street, too.

The world cup is all over now and I grudgingly congratulate the Spanish national team for winning the cup! You just were the best team in the match... and we won the match for the third place... again (damn, nobody ever remembers the thrid world cup winner). But we kicked England and Argentina 4:1 and 4:0 and that's more than historic! And so I'm looking forward the next Euro Cup... and for that event I will finally wash my Schland!-shirt that looks pretty rough after the matches (and smells like beer and tears ;) - yes, it was a hard fight.

In three days 2010 FIFA World Cup begins and so I chose spreadshirt.de to order an self made fan-shirt with my Euro Cup '08 Schland!-Ratte on the front!

I got the shirt several days later but spreadshirt.de was so kind to inform me that the word "Schland" was registered as a word mark by Raab TV-Produktion GmbH. (How can you trademark one and a half syllables of a country's name? Well, Stefan Raab can do everything! (that's why I still want him as our german national team coach - and I want to see a Schlag den Raab versus Chuck Norris!!))
So I had to make an modified version of the original shirt to put it up for sale in MY SHOP. It says deutschLANDRATTE now and you better not ask me to draw you a holLANDRATTE... ;)

So I'll keep my fingers crossed for Germany and wir werden Weltmeister sein! SCHLAND!!

Ok, if we had not been heaped by alarming news from airports from all over Europe on TV and if my sister had not been directly affected by the ban on flying, I would not have noticed the ash monster in the sky above me. Somehow I really missed a bit of the apocalyptic atmosphere outside, when I sat under a clear blue sky in the sun reading this BILD-article, which made it's way into my all time's favourite BILD-titles straightaway (and inspired me to make an oldschool B-movie-poster out of this event).

Yesterday I modelled this head of my fave comic character The Goon (by Eric Powell). I used Efaplast, a pretty cheap and air drying modeling compound and it's ca. 17cm / 7 inches high.
And yepp, I have to admit, I'm very pleased with the result (although I think that his chin is ways too small when you compare it to the comic, it's too "realistic" - well it's my interpretation of the charakter ;)
But now I don't know if I should colour it or not, because I somehow like this "roman bust"-appearance (and I'm afraid to spoil it by colouring). Well, I'll post the result of my decision :)

This is my dad hailed as a true Metal head. I have drawn this as a birthday gift certificate for a new e-bass he needs for his upcoming career in a new band. The band rather plays Hard Rock than Metal, but it was just fun to exaggerate his look. And the flying bra shows that the fan base digs this Manowar appearance ;)

Three weeks ago I had the chance to get a book signed by Eric Powell, the creator of The Goon-comic series at Mr.C in Bochum and to talk with him and even show my portfolio to him in Frankfurt. It was pure motivation to see my favourite and - in my opinion - one of today's best comic artist liking my stuff (and especially my zombies) :)

Look what happened! Some month ago I drew this two building site illustrations and sent them to the games publisher Schmidt Spiele.

And last week they sent the illustrations back, but when I opened the box I was taken aback at the state of my pictures: They were smashed into smithereens!! It's an outright scandal in my opinion! ;)

It was fun to fix it tho... they should think about making a puzzle out of it :P

I have recently drawn this jolly roger-skull with crossed microphones instead of bones for the Wuppertaler Wortpiraten, a group of 3 authors who took up the cause of capturing the german poetry slam-scene. On board are Nina Behrmann, André Wiesler und David Grashoff, the head of Projekt Kopfkino and creator of Ratten!

Dominik Diesslin added the banner and the typo and so made a proper and pretty cool looking logo...

They made a 2,50 meters high wooden stand-up out of it for a city festival in Karlsruhe. Napoleon has never been that tall before...

In the last month I worked on two new books for Cornelsen's Klick!-Mathematik series. With every issue of the series the pupils in the books are getting older and the drawings change more and more from children's book to a comic-book style. This month the Münster based Indie-Ska-Polka-Pop-combo (that's how they describe themselves) Home to Paris released their new and third record "Melodienwagen". I designed the Album cover for them again with all the band members playing as marionettes in an old barrel organ. Ain't it melodic :)?

A happy new Year version 2.9 to all of you - hope you didn't miss to update!
Same as last year my new chemnist's calender for 2009 is out and again I'm happy about it. This year's topic are famous cities of europe (and immediate neighbours like Russia).
It was fun as well as exhausting to draw the cities in a recognizable way and - above all - fill them with live. So try to find the fox in the pictures and make out which cities I tried to illustrate in the several months.
